Family Meetings at Invictus

There are many ways to define and experience what a “family” looks like in this world. At Invictus Academy of Richmond, we consider every student, teacher, and staff to be our family. We are in a close community together, building close relationships of support and trust. We believe that coming together and celebrating each other regularly is a key ingredient to the deep connections and relationships that we cultivate at our school. While our parent partnership is an active and engaging way to keep parents included in students’ work and success at school, we also model an extended definition of the word “family”.

When individuals feel welcomed and recognized for their unique contribution or attributes, it creates trust and a sense of belonging. To build upon this concept, we gather the entire school in our outdoor courtyard every Friday afternoon for our Invictus Family Meetings. Each week, we celebrate a “student of the week” from each grade in addition to a chosen teacher or staff member. While we do welcome parents to join us, these meetings are predominantly for our Invictus family to connect, reflect and celebrate one another.

Student of the Week

Life is filled with continual change, adaptability challenges and growth opportunities - regardless of age. At Invictus, we pay attention to all types of accomplishments and successes that our students achieve every week. We love to honor students who have improved in academics or  behavior, shown extra effort, or achieved an academic or personal goal.

Once we have nominated our students and the staff has voted for the “students of the week”, a winner from each grade is honored in front of the school and given a special t-shirt. A teacher or staff member speaks on their behalf, sharing with the school what accomplishments inspired their votes. For each “student of the week”, a friend or peer is also asked to stand up and say something on their behalf, fostering communication skills and a sense of family community.

Staff Member of the Week

Invictus students are also given the task of nominating and voting for a staff winner. We love to turn the spotlight on members of our staff who go above and beyond their call of duty, helping to define our school and create the success that it is. By recognizing and honoring them, we are continually modeling our culture of positivity, support, and empowerment.
