Invictus Clubs

At Invictus Academy of Richmond, we believe all students are enriched by participating in extracurricular activities, thus we include Club Period in our school day so all students can participate in one. Clubs serve to activate students’ minds in a different way from their academic classes, enabling students to build strong habits and mindsets in multiple ways.

All of our teachers lead an extracurricular club, bringing their passions and personal interests to share with their students. This level of invitation to bring our whole selves to school in order to explore and connect together -- outside of academic pursuit -- deepens the connections we have with our students. Relationships formed and deepened between staff and students in clubs, in turn, extend into classes, creating a virtuous cycle that drives continued growth and improvement as the school year unfolds.

Academics Benefit from Extracurricular Clubs & Activities

Our North Star is academic achievement and we believe in purposeful structure to support students’ academic growth. One ingredient of our purposeful educational structure at Invictus is variety. We make sure to activate both hemispheres of our students’ brains, igniting the power of achievement and out of the box thinking.

There is strong and growing research that participation in extracurricular activities does, in fact, generate academic gains for middle and high school students. Kate Schwartz, a doctoral student in the Psychology and Social Intervention program at NYU Steinhardt and lead author of a study on the subject in the American Journal of Community Psychology explains, “If you can find extracurricular activities that help you feel like you’re good at something and you feel like trying hard pays off, you might apply that back to your schoolwork.” This is one of many reasons that extracurricular activities are not “extra” at Invictus, but offered and required of all students as part of our educational model.
